A Glimpse of August 25th, 2030

I offered the organizers of TEDxParis to talk to their next event but they declined. Unbeknownst to me was the theme of the meeting: 2030. Given what we have seen so far in the burgeoning fields of compressive sensing, advanced matrix factorization, big data and so forth, subjects that are only 8 to 12 years old at most, I wonder how one could extrapolate something about our everyday life on August 25th, 2030 or 18 years from now. For that I'll be using some of the figures featured on Nuit Blanche.

Putting this into perspective, 18 years ago was August 25th, 1994. Google did not exist, Gopher was in full use by people who had access to the interwebs and most countries did not have commercial ISPs.

There are no dates but this list contains some of the most important algorithms (some additional thoughts can be found here and in the comments here), even though it is surprising that nobody seems to care that the FMM is not listed, it must be a CS bias. SIAM has a list that is both date stamped and dated but it does feature the FMM.

Stay tuned.
