Nuit Blanche Reader's mailbag

After a discussion following up Catching an aha moment with compressive sensingMohammed AlQuraishi sent me the following:
Hi Igor,

Just wanted to let you know that I put up a local copy of the paper on my website. It’s accessible from here:

Thanks again!

Thanks Mohammed,  let there be more aha moments as a result of reading this paper!

Dear Igor,
Jack Rudloe, President of the Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory (http://www.gulfspecimen.org/), would like to give octopuses control of a computer display to see what they choose to look at and react to. We could just have a preselected group of pictures of what we think octopuses might like to look at (crabs, other octopuses, or the many toys they’ve taken from our hands), or let them surf Google Image, but I thought it might be better to let them build pictures themselves of what they’d like to see. Clearly, despite 8 arms, the input should be as simple as possible (say a touch screen that reads multiple touches simultaneously) and the output as complex as possible for given input. It seemed to me that designing such a drawing program for octopuses is a problem analogous to compressive sensing. If you think I’m right, how about throwing this idea out to the compressive sensing community and see if anyone wants to take up the challenge. Thanks.
Yours, -Dick

There is definitely the idea that using 8 arms is some sort of multiplexing! We recently talks about octopuses recently and how devilishly intelligent they are.

Over thew week-end, I have started several Pinterest boards. If you want to contribute, let me know and I'll send you an invite, so far we have:

Following up on Paul Graham's essay, I asked a question on Quota about What are other "Frighteningly Ambitious Startup Ideas"?
