Maybe it's just a question of TILTing it ?

Remember Peter Gerstoft's paper on the localization of the Tohoku-Oki earthquake ? Well if you read the paper [1], you'll notice the following figure and the process by which the station's signals are aligned (cross correlation)

Cross correlation is ok but is there another way of doing this ? I rotated the figure 90 degrees to make it more obvious and here is what we have:





Those a low rank matrices. Couldn't the cross correlation step be replaced by TILT at every time step instead ? ....
