Google seems to try several ways to hire people they consider very good. So they tried proximity and small challenges like
this billboard announcement. But in the end, they also need to refine their needs and the only way to do this efficiently seems to be the use of Adwords with the right keywords or series of keywords. Take for instance
a Google search on basis pursuit. As evidenced in the lack of Google Adwords on
matching pursuit, they already know one algorithm is doing
better than the other.
