Because there is indeed the sense that dictionary should be fed with results of (very complex) forward models such as those produced by codes like MCNP or GEANT4.
Also this week, Mark alerted me to Listening in the Wild meeting in London. The program and abstract booklet is here. This sort of research and the one listed after fit right into this Just on the right side of Impossible business models (i.e Communicating with Animals) I mentioned a while back.

Which reminded of an email by Herve Glotin a while pointing to the ERMITES 2011 workshop on Sparse Decomposition, Contraction and Structuration for Complex Scene Analysis. Videos and slides are available directly from the booklet. (Lectures are in French but the slides are in English) and at least one presentation was about the sound of whales and more.
