PhD Position – Exploration of wiring diagnostics via compressive sensing: Algorithms and ultra-compact Analog-to-Information (A2I) architectures

Wired networks are considered as the backbones of complex systems. The increase of the complexity of modern systems has come with the increase of wire lengths. Whatever their application domain, wires can be subject to aggressive environmental conditions which may create defects. These defects can have dramatic consequences and if not detected soon can be the cause of deadly accident.

The state of the art methods for wired networks inspection are based on the reflectometry principles. In order to perform the analysis, detect and locate soft-fault, the system must inject and sample signals at a relatively high frequency. As a consequence, high performance components are often required which increases the cost and reduce the power efficiency of the system. To meet the requirements of future embedded systems, which will incorporate a health monitoring system, low cost high performance real-time wire diagnostic systems must be developed.

Compressive Sensing (CS) is a paradigmatic shift in the way information is represented, stored, transmitted and recovered.

Contrarily to Shannon’s sampling theorem, CS theory asserts that one can recover certain signals (i.e. sparse signals) from far fewer samples or measurements. This method appears to be effective to relax constrains on hardware for signal acquisition and processing.

Following CS theory, the signals injected into the wire can thus be acquired in a compressed form using Analog-to-Information (A2I) conversion circuits. In A2I converters, the compression occurs directly in the analog sensor readout electronics prior to analog-to-digital conversion. They could thus be of great importance for applications where both computing and power resources are severely constrained (e.g. Smart wire diagnostic sensors).
